President Volodymyr Zelensky Visits Ireland for Bilateral Talks Amid Ongoing Conflict

DUBLIN: President Volodymyr Zelensky has arrived in Ireland for a series of bilateral discussions concerning Russia’s continued occupation of Ukraine. This marks Zelensky’s first official visit to Ireland. The two leaders had previously met at the Ukraine Peace Summit in Switzerland in June.

Zelensky landed at Shannon Airport in County Clare on his return journey from attending NATO’s 75th anniversary summit in Washington, D.C. He arrived at noon and was welcomed by Prime Minister Simon Harris, Ukrainian Ambassador to Ireland Larysa Gerasko, and other senior leaders and officials.

Expression of Gratitude

In response to journalists’ questions about his visit, Zelensky expressed his gratitude to Ireland for its support and assistance to thousands of Ukrainian refugees. “Ireland has stood by Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian occupation,” Zelensky stated.

Ireland’s Support for Ukraine

Prime Minister Simon Harris paid tribute to the thousands of Ukrainian citizens who have lost their lives in the war and reiterated Ireland’s full support for Ukraine’s bid for EU membership. Harris also pledged increased educational support for thousands of Ukrainian children forcibly relocated to Russia and Belarus. He confirmed Ireland’s commitment to the International Coalition for the Return of approximately 20,000 children.

Ireland-Ukraine Cooperation

Ireland has contributed €250 million in military aid to Ukraine through the European Peace Facility and has provided shelter to 108,000 Ukrainians under the directive of the European Union. Additionally, the Irish Defence Forces have offered specialised training to 455 Ukrainian soldiers, including mine disposal techniques.
