Raging Wildfire Devastates Jasper, Canada, Threatening Up to 50% of Structures; Firefighters Battle to Save Town

A raging wildfire has devastated the western Canadian tourist town of Jasper, potentially destroying up to 50% of its structures. Firefighters are working to save as many buildings as possible, as the fire remains out of control. Jasper, located in the mountainous Jasper National Park in Alberta, was evacuated on Monday, displacing up to 10,000 people from the town and an additional 15,000 visitors from the park.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith, visibly emotional, described the situation as the “worst nightmare” for any community, acknowledging the significant structural damage and the daunting rebuild ahead. Parks Canada reported a “significant loss” of buildings but could not provide specific details, urging residents to stay away.

Footage from Jasper shows vehicles and entire blocks, including a historic Anglican church, reduced to ashes. Concerns extend to the Trans Mountain oil pipeline, though no damage has been reported so far. CN Rail has suspended operations through Jasper, and the Port of Vancouver anticipates delays in goods movement.

Emergency crews from across Alberta, as well as 400 firefighters from Mexico, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand, are being deployed. Alberta is currently battling 176 wildfires, with over 50 out of control. In neighbouring British Columbia, 423 wildfires are burning, prompting numerous evacuation orders.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has convened the Incident Response Group to coordinate federal resources and support efforts in Jasper. The wildfire, sparked by a lightning strike and fueled by strong winds, has seen flames reaching 100 metres high. Environment Canada forecasts rain, which could aid firefighting efforts.

The Jasper Park Lodge, operated by Fairmont, has reported the fire reaching its grounds. This disaster may rival the 2016 Fort McMurray wildfire, which forced the evacuation of 90,000 residents and destroyed 10% of the city.
