Dublin Bus Profits Affected in 2023 by Costs of Buses Damaged During November Riots

Dublin: Dublin Bus’s profits for 2023 were affected by a provision for the costs associated with buses damaged during the Dublin Riots in November. According to the 2023 annual report, the company recorded a pre-tax profit of €2.3 million.

The report indicates that the company’s Public Service Obligation (PSO) profitability was impacted by these provisions. A note in the accounts mentions that Dublin Bus continues to engage with stakeholders regarding these costs.

A company spokeswoman confirmed that during the riots, three buses were destroyed by fire, one sustained minor fire damage, and another had broken windows. Dublin Bus is actively seeking compensation for these damages.

CEO Billy Hann emphasised the importance of ensuring safety during civil unrest and the necessity of suspending services to protect employees and customers.

Chairperson Gary Owens highlighted the ongoing challenge of traffic congestion in Dublin, noting its impact on service reliability. He called for continued efforts to reduce car dependency and improve public transport efficiency, drawing on improvements seen during the pandemic.

Revenue for 2023 increased by 8% to €334 million, supported by 146 million customer journeys, up from 121.4 million in 2022.
