US Tariff Threat on Irish Pharmaceuticals Sparks Economic Concerns
Dublin: The US President’s recent comments and threat of imposing tariffs on Ireland’s pharmaceutical sector have raised serious concerns among industry workers, including tens of thousands of Indians employed in Ireland.
Irish Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe previously warned that the introduction of tariffs could put 50,000 to 80,000 jobs at risk and lead to a 24% decline in GDP.
Trump Confirms Tariff Plans
Former US President Donald Trump confirmed last night that tariffs will be imposed on pharmaceuticals produced in Ireland. He emphasised that despite earlier warnings, pharmaceutical products continue to be manufactured in the country, and his administration’s move is aimed at bringing drug production back to the US.
Finance Minister Donohoe reiterated his concerns, stating that Irish pharmaceutical exports to the US, valued at $72.6 billion last year, would suffer a severe blow if tariffs are enacted. Given that pharmaceuticals form a major portion of Ireland’s trade with the US, the economic impact could be significant.
Industry and Political Reactions
Oliver O’Connor, CEO of the Irish Pharmaceutical Healthcare Association (IPHA), criticised the proposed tariffs, arguing that they would increase drug prices worldwide without benefiting the pharmaceutical industry. He also pointed out that for over 30 years, pharmaceuticals and medicines have been exempt from tariffs under World Trade Organisation (WTO) agreements.
Trump has previously criticised Ireland’s pharmaceutical industry, particularly during his meeting with Prime Minister Micheál Martin in the Oval Office, where he accused Ireland of attracting US pharmaceutical companies through favourable tax policies.
Meanwhile, the Irish opposition has expressed fears that US-imposed tariffs could trigger a global economic conflict, jeopardising Ireland’s economy and disrupting international trade. Opposition leaders have accused the US of using tariffs as a weapon in an economic war that could have far-reaching consequences.
