United States Vetoes UN Security Council Ceasefire Resolution on Gaza
Geneva: The United States has vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution that called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and unrestricted humanitarian access to the region. The move blocked the resolution despite overwhelming support from 14 of the 15 council members. This marks the first Security Council vote on the matter since November.
The proposed resolution sought an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities in Gaza, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and the release of all hostages held by Hamas and affiliated groups. It also emphasised the urgent need to address the worsening humanitarian crisis in the Palestinian territory.
The U.S., a permanent member of the Council, justified its veto by stating that the resolution failed to explicitly condemn Hamas, which it described as a terrorist organisation. The American representative argued that the measure would undermine ongoing diplomatic efforts and that no meaningful negotiations had taken place prior to the vote. “We have made it clear we will not support any resolution that does not include a clear condemnation of Hamas,” the U.S. envoy said.
Algeria, which introduced the resolution, expressed disappointment over the veto, emphasising that the proposal represented the collective voice of the international community. “This resolution is not the position of a few—it reflects the will of the overwhelming majority of nations,” said Algeria’s representative. “Today, 14 members of this Council affirmed that the Palestinian people are not alone.”
The veto has drawn sharp criticism from multiple quarters and reignited debate over the Security Council’s effectiveness in addressing the deepening crisis in Gaza.
