Anti-Immigrant Protests Turn Violent in Ballymena, Prompting Heavy Police Deployment
Belfast: The Northern Ireland town of Ballymena, County Antrim, has witnessed two consecutive nights of violent unrest amid intensifying anti-immigrant protests along Ireland’s border regions. In response, the government has significantly increased the police presence in an effort to restore order and prevent further escalation.
Despite preventive measures, violent clashes erupted again on Monday night, with protesters hurling fireworks, bottles, and iron bars at officers from the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI). The demonstrations, which began peacefully, quickly devolved into chaos as hundreds took to the streets, shouting aggressive slogans, burning tyres, and torching vehicles.
Background and Escalation
The unrest follows a memorial service held for a young girl, allegedly sexually assaulted by two Romanian teenagers over the weekend. Emotions ran high in the aftermath, with local residents blaming immigrants for the incident. The two 14-year-olds have been arrested and brought before the courts. Another 28-year-old man was also arrested on Monday but was released after questioning, further inflaming tensions.
The situation worsened when masked individuals separated from the main protest group and began erecting barricades on Galgorm Road, later advancing to Clonavon Terrace, where multiple homes were vandalised, and two houses were set ablaze. Violent clashes with the police left 15 officers injured, several of whom required hospitalisation.
Arrests and Legal Proceedings
A 29-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of rioting, assault, and resisting police and is due to appear before Ballymena Magistrates’ Court on July 3. Authorities have confirmed that further arrests are expected, with CCTV and video footage under review to identify additional perpetrators.
Official Response
Senior PSNI officer Superintendent Henderson described the violence as a criminal act involving racially motivated abuse. He affirmed the police force’s commitment to bringing all involved to justice and emphasized that the events cannot be tolerated in a civil society.
In light of the escalating violence, additional police reinforcements from England and Wales are being considered. Henderson stated that national-level resources would be mobilised if required.
Residents of Clonavon Terrace reported significant property damage, with locks and windows smashed and several homes left uninhabitable. The community remains tense, with many residents fearing a further deterioration in safety and security.
The violence in Ballymena highlights rising tensions in parts of Northern Ireland surrounding immigration and public safety. Civil society organisations have urged calm, while authorities stress the importance of lawful expression and the need to avoid scapegoating minority communities.
Investigations remain ongoing, and the PSNI continues to maintain a high-visibility security presence in the area.
