Indian Ambassador Expresses Concern Over Rising Attacks on Community in Ireland
Dublin: Indian Ambassador to Ireland, Akhilesh Mishra, has expressed deep concern over the recent spate of violent attacks targeting members of the Indian community. Speaking at the India Day Festival organised by the Federation of Indian Communities in Ireland (FICI) at Merrion Square, Dublin, the ambassador said he was working to reassure the community and ensure their safety.
“I believe the Gardaí and political leadership are extending all possible support. Measures are being taken to strengthen security in public spaces, and I am confident that the Indian diaspora will continue to feel welcome here. I am deeply grateful for this support,” Ambassador Mishra stated.
A representative from the Gardaí also attended the event. Inspector Keeran Nunan of the Garda National Community Engagement Bureau emphasised the importance of reporting concerns, saying, “We want to ensure that all communities across Ireland feel safe. Engaging with the public at events like this is vital, and I strongly encourage anyone affected by hate crime to come forward.”
The India Day celebrations drew hundreds of participants and featured vibrant cultural performances, including traditional dance and music.
Dr. Jasbir Singh Puri, Chairperson of FICI, said the Indian community had drawn inspiration from global St. Patrick’s Day celebrations in showcasing their own national day. “Our values and culture are rooted in mutual respect. Ireland welcomes thousands, and we share that ethos. In our tradition, every guest is treated like a god. To Indians concerned about recent attacks, I would say that such incidents occur worldwide. The Irish people, by and large, remain warm, welcoming, and true friends,” he noted.
Meanwhile, reports suggest that recent incidents of violence in Dublin have included groups of women among the perpetrators, highlighting a shift in patterns of such attacks. At the same time, the circulation of fake social media posts has been fuelling anti-India sentiment among anti-immigrant groups, further compounding tensions.
