VAT Cut Expected for Hospitality Sector..
Dublin: Enterprise Minister Peter Burke signalled that a VAT reduction for parts of the hospitality industry will be “front and centre” of a new tourism strategy due next month. He stressed the move would support more than 200,000 jobs in restaurants, cafés, and related businesses, which have faced rising costs in recent years.
Mr Burke declined to confirm whether hotels would be included in the VAT cut but criticised the sector for inflated prices during major events in Dublin, calling such practices “unacceptable” and damaging to Ireland’s tourism image. He said this issue will be addressed in upcoming budget talks with Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe.
The minister also launched the government’s new market diversification plan, developed with the Department of Foreign Affairs to build a resilient, competitive, and globally connected economy.
While confirming the US remains a cornerstone of Irish trade policy, he said efforts are underway to grow ties in Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Gulf under the Global Ireland 2040 framework. Tánaiste Simon Harris added that Ireland now has diplomatic missions in over 100 cities worldwide, with trade promotion as a core priority.
