Ryanair Increases Incentives for Gate Staff to Enforce Baggage Rules
Dublin: Ryanair has announced new measures to strengthen the enforcement of its baggage policy, including higher incentives for gate staff who identify oversized luggage.
From November, staff will receive €2.50 per oversized bag, up from the current €1.50, with the existing monthly cap of €80 being removed. The move is aimed at discouraging passengers from attempting to bypass the airline’s strict baggage regulations.
At a press conference in London, Ryanair CEO Michael O’Leary said the change is designed to reward staff for ensuring compliance with rules and preventing passengers from “cheating the system”.
Ryanair allows passengers to bring only a small bag that fits under the seat free of charge. Larger cabin bags or oversized luggage incur additional fees, with charges at the boarding gate reaching up to €75.
O’Leary defended the policy, saying the airline remains one of Europe’s most efficient and affordable carriers:
“If you follow the rules, there will be no problems. The ground staff are simply doing their job by catching those who try to avoid the system.”
According to the airline, around 200,000 passengers are charged for oversized baggage at gates every year. O’Leary noted that Ryanair will continue tightening enforcement to reduce non-compliance.
