Children Under Nine Can Now Travel Free on Public Transport
Dublin: Transport for Ireland (TFI) has expanded free travel for children, allowing all kids under nine to use public transport without charge. The updated Child Leap Card, effective immediately, extends free travel to children aged five to eight, benefiting nearly 236,000 additional young passengers.
Announced in Budget 2025, the move aims to make public transport more affordable and encourage sustainable travel habits from an early age. Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien said the initiative will help families reduce costs while familiarising children with buses, trains, and trams. Junior ministers highlighted the added convenience for parents and the long-term cultural shift towards public transport use.
