Storm Amy Brings Ireland to a Standstill..
Dublin: Life across Ireland has been severely disrupted by heavy rain and high winds brought by Storm Amy, marking one of the most intense weather events in recent decades. Continuous rainfall since early yesterday — affecting every county — has been described as unprecedented in recent Irish history.
At least one fatality has been reported in Donegal, where a 40-year-old man died after being struck by a falling tree in Letterkenny around 4:15 p.m. The victim’s body has been taken to Letterkenny University Hospital for a post-mortem examination.
The storm left 124,000 homes and businesses without power, with a total of 184,000 outages recorded nationwide. Power has since been restored to most affected areas.
Widespread flooding was reported across the southwest, west, and northwest, with fallen trees and power lines blocking roads and rail routes. At Dublin Airport, 58 flights were cancelled due to high winds, which reached speeds of up to 148 km/h in the hardest-hit regions.
The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has warned of further severe flooding in Kerry, West Cork, and West Limerick, as well as Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, and Roscommon.
Met Éireann has issued an orange wind warning for Donegal, Leitrim, and Sligo, in effect from 4 a.m. to 8 a.m. Saturday, alongside a nationwide yellow wind alert until 10 p.m. tonight. Additional yellow wind and rain warnings are in place for Clare, Kerry, Galway, and Mayo from midnight to noon, while Dublin, Louth, and Wicklow will remain under a yellow wind alert from 6 a.m. to noon.
In Northern Ireland, Storm Amy has caused extensive damage, leaving 50,000 households without power. Hundreds of trees have fallen, disrupting bus and train services across the region. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) confirmed that multiple agencies have convened to assess the storm’s impact and coordinate the emergency response.
