Dublin: Met Éireann has issued an orange weather alert for County Cork and yellow alerts for Kerry, Wexford, and Waterford, warning of heavy rainfall, possible flooding, and travel disruptions over the weekend.
According to the national forecaster, intense rain is expected across Cork, with a risk of river and surface flooding, particularly in mountainous and low-lying areas. Travel conditions may become hazardous due to standing water and reduced visibility.
The orange alert for Cork will remain in effect from 9 p.m. tonight until 5 a.m. Sunday, upgrading the earlier yellow warning.
Meanwhile, a yellow alert for Kerry will be active from 5 p.m. tonight until 5 a.m. Sunday, and similar warnings will apply to Waterford and Wexford from 8 p.m. tonight until 8 a.m. Sunday. Met Éireann has cautioned that these areas may experience heavy showers, isolated thunderstorms, and localised flooding.
Public Advised to Check Local Conditions and Travel Safely
The Road Safety Authority (RSA) has urged motorists and road users in affected areas to check local traffic and weather updates before travelling. Drivers are advised to reduce speed, increase braking distance, and remain vigilant for debris or standing water on roads.
Pedestrians are reminded to walk on the right-hand side of the road where no footpaths are available, while cyclists are advised to use front (white) and rear (red) lights and wear high-visibility clothing to ensure they are seen by other road users.
Local Response and Emergency Contacts
The Cork County Council Weather Assessment Team convened yesterday to review preparations for the forecasted severe weather and conducted inspections of flood-prone and vulnerable locations. Pumping systems and flood defences have been deployed as a precaution.
The Council has urged all motorists to exercise extreme caution and report any incidents of flooding, blocked roads, or damage to its Emergency Out of Hours service at (021) 4800048.
In case of emergencies, residents can contact the Fire Service, Ambulance, Gardaí, or Irish Coast Guard by dialling 999 or 112.
Authorities continue to monitor conditions closely and advise the public to remain alert for further updates from Met Éireann throughout the weekend.
