Riots Continue in Saggart Following Refugee Assault Case; 23 Arrested as Violence Spreads

Dublin: The unrest in Saggart, sparked by the alleged sexual assault of a girl, shows no sign of abating. The number of arrests has risen to 23, as violent clashes between protesters and Gardaí continue near the Citywest refugee accommodation centre.

According to Garda reports, two officers were hospitalised following last night’s violence — one after being struck on the head with a bottle, and another with injuries to his arm and shoulder. Masked youths reportedly threw fireworks and glass bottles at Garda units guarding the refugee facility.

An estimated 2,000 people gathered again outside the centre, where tensions have remained high for several nights. Protests demanding the expulsion of refugees have also been reported in other parts of the country.

A heavy Garda presence — including mounted units, a dog squad, and more than 300 officers — was deployed to contain the situation. Gardaí also established a security cordon near the Citywest Hotel after intelligence suggested that some protesters had brought sacks of bottles to use as weapons. Officers recovered several glass bottles removed from residential bins in the area.

Justice Minister Jim O’Callaghan confirmed that multiple arrests were made and said further detentions are expected. He commended the Gardaí for acting “bravely and professionally” under dangerous circumstances. “Those responsible for the violence will face the full force of the law,” he added.

The unrest has also disrupted public transport in West Dublin. Luas Red Line services between Belgard and Saggart remain suspended, while Dublin Bus route 69 has been diverted to avoid the affected area. A Luas spokesperson said operations will resume only after Garda clearance.

Meanwhile, the 26-year-old refugee accused of raping a 10-year-old girl remains in judicial custody, pending further investigation.
