Murder Suspect in Death of Ukrainian Teen Believed to Be an Adult

Dublin: Gardaí now believe that the suspect accused of murdering Ukrainian teenager Vadim Davydenko in North Dublin last month is an adult, despite earlier being classified as a minor. The development comes after documents obtained from the suspect’s relatives reportedly confirmed that he was over 18 years old at the time of the incident.

The case, which had initially been brought before the Children’s Court, recorded the accused’s age as 17. Following the new information, Gardaí have notified the court and are seeking additional official documentation to verify the suspect’s exact age.

Background of the Case
Seventeen-year-old Vadim Davydenko was killed on October 15 at an apartment complex in Grattan Wood, Donaghmede. The victim had been living for four days at a facility for juvenile international protection applicants in Tusla care after being separated from his parents. The suspect, who was also residing in the same facility, was later arrested and detained at the Oberstown Detention Centre, which houses offenders under 18 years old.

The new revelations regarding the suspect’s age emerged following a media-led investigation, which examined birth certificates and other records obtained from family members. Gardaí are now reviewing this information to determine the appropriate jurisdiction for the trial.

At his previous court appearance, the accused arrived under heavy security, escorted by five armed Gardaí. He wore a white T-shirt, black tracksuit bottoms, and slippers, with his arms bandaged from elbow to wrist.

The next hearing in the case is scheduled for November 18, with the judge directing Gardaí to arrange an interpreter for the proceedings. Two representatives from Tusla were present at the last hearing in accordance with the Children Act, which mandates the presence of guardians or appointed representatives in cases involving minors.

Authorities are continuing to investigate both the circumstances of the killing and the administrative oversight that led to the suspect being treated as a juvenile. Gardaí have not released further details while inquiries are ongoing.
