Ireland Introduces New Law Mandating ATM Access Within 10km of Every Home

Dublin: A new law requiring financial institutions to ensure the availability of at least one ATM within a 10-kilometre radius of every household in Ireland—rural or urban—will come into force this week. The order was signed yesterday by newly appointed Minister for Finance Simon Harris, marking one of his first official actions in the role.

The legislation was approved by a parliamentary committee last May, after which the Central Bank was tasked with compiling nationwide data on the distribution of ATMs. With this process now complete, the law is ready for implementation.

The move comes in response to the widespread closure of bank branches in recent years, which has caused significant inconvenience for communities, particularly in rural areas. The new ATM requirement aims to ensure consistent access to cash services for people across the country.
