Unidentified Military-Grade Drones Breach Restricted Zone Ahead of Zelensky’s Arrival in Dublin

Dublin: A serious security investigation is underway after four unidentified, military-style drones breached a restricted airspace shortly before Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s arrival in Dublin on Monday night. The incident has raised significant concerns about Ireland’s defence capabilities as the country prepares to assume the presidency of the European Union next year.

Zelensky’s aircraft landed at approximately 11 p.m., moments after the drones entered the area along the expected route of his flight. The breach echoes recent drone-related disruptions in Europe, including temporary airport closures in Brussels and Denmark.

According to officials, the drones penetrated a no-fly zone declared by the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA) and flew over a restricted maritime area near Dublin Airport. Gardaí are examining whether the drones were launched from the Dublin coastline or from a vessel offshore.

Drones Flew Over Secretly Deployed Navy Vessel

The drones also flew directly over the Irish Navy ship LE William Butler Yeats, which had been covertly positioned in the Irish Sea as part of security measures for Zelensky’s visit. Operating within 12 nautical miles of Irish-controlled waters, the drones are believed to have been launched near Howth, northeast of Dublin, and remained airborne for nearly two hours.
Investigators have yet to determine who operated them or where they are now.

Senior officials, including Garda Commissioner Justin Kelly, were briefed early on Tuesday. The Taoiseach and Tánaiste were informed several hours later. It remains unclear whether Zelensky’s delegation has been notified. A high-level security meeting involving An Garda Síochána, the Defence Forces, and senior civil servants has since taken place in Dublin.

Suspected Hybrid Attack

Security analysts suspect the drones were deployed deliberately to disrupt Zelensky’s arrival. Their lights were reportedly switched on while approaching the flight path—an apparent attempt to interfere with aircraft movement.

Ireland’s intelligence and security agencies have classified the incident as a hybrid attack, a form of warfare combining military and non-military tools—including drones, cyber operations, sabotage, and disinformation—to destabilise targets without open conflict.

Sources indicate that the drones were large, high-cost UAVs of military specification, each controlled independently by four separate operators.

Defence Limitations Exposed

The incident has highlighted critical gaps in Ireland’s air defence capabilities.
The Navy vessel lacked air radar and had no effective means to disable the drones aside from machine guns, which were not used. An Irish Air Corps aircraft was also on patrol at the time but did not intervene.

Handheld drone-disruption devices used by An Garda Síochána were ineffective, as the UAVs were operating beyond their range. The drones are believed to have been quadcopters—equipped with four rotors—allowing them to hover precisely over the naval ship.

Despite the security breach, President Zelensky’s visit concluded without incident. In the aftermath of the drone activity, his aircraft was granted specialist take-off clearance at Dublin Airport.
