Arctic Cold Snap to Grip Ireland in Early January, Snow Possible in Dublin

Dublin: Winter conditions are set to intensify across Ireland as Met Éireann forecasts the arrival of an Arctic air mass between January 1 and January 7. Temperatures in Dublin are expected to fall to as low as -1°C this week, with a sharp drop anticipated nationwide in the coming days.

Meteorologists say cold Arctic air, following the development of a low-pressure system, will bring a significant chill and increase the risk of snowfall, particularly in northern and western parts of the country. Dublin and other eastern counties could also see snow, with the Met Office issuing a fresh alert for potential “winter precipitation”.

According to forecasters, parts of Leinster—especially Dublin, Wicklow and Wexford—may experience snowfall due to a phenomenon known as “sea-effect snow”, where cold air passes over relatively warmer seas, generating snow showers along the coast. Despite this, today is expected to remain cloudy but largely dry in the capital.

Cold Spell Coincides With School Reopening

The cold weather is forecast to persist as children prepare to return to school after the Christmas holidays. Freezing temperatures and wintry conditions are likely during the first week of January, though the government has not indicated any extension to the school break.

Weather observers warn that sub-zero temperatures could become more widespread as the week progresses, bringing bitterly cold conditions. However, Carlow Weather experts caution that snowfall is not guaranteed across all areas, noting that the cold snap could last up to five days without significant accumulation in some regions.

As with previous severe weather events, the Department of Education has confirmed that decisions on school closures due to snow or extreme cold will be made by individual school managements, based on local conditions.

Snow Warnings Extend to the UK

Meanwhile, the UK Met Office has issued warnings that up to 10cm of snow could fall in parts of Britain this weekend, with forecasters comparing the potential severity to the winter of 2010.
