Milkshake sales soared in Ireland despite Level 5 restrictions

DUBLIN: While the lockdown has affected many businesses, it has been proven that this is not the case with milkshakes. The business world is shocked to see Milkshake’s sales skyrocket on the Level 5 restrictions. Everyone was surprised when they saw the increase in orders for these on takeaway drives.

During the second lockdown in October and November, cold malted orders increased by 84%. Milkshake sales would have slowed during the normally colder months. But this time, when more than 20,000 takeaway orders were checked, the vast majority of them were milkshakes, said Dario Macari, operations director at Romayo’s chipper.

They were making sales history in 2019-20 compared to 2018-19. “It was completely unexpected. I needed to double check the numbers when I saw this,” Dario Macari said.

“The milkshake showed an increase during the first lockdown in March, getting into the top five, but nothing like what we have seen in recent weeks.

In both lockdowns, a large pizza with sides was the best-selling take-away meal for customers. Its sales increased by 52% in October-November, Macari said. Kebabs made it into second place (up 37%), followed by quarter pounders (up 20%), beef burgers (up 61%) and a battered sausage meal deal (up 37%).

Earlier this year, Romayo’s announced that it would create 45 jobs in the next 12 months with the opening of three new outlets in Dublin. Romayo’s, formerly known as Macari’s has 19 restaurants in Dublin, Meath, Offaly and Kildare.
