Leaving Cert exam in June as usual; students will also have option for a calculated grade

DUBLIN: The Department of Education has stated that, as usual, preparations have started for the Leaving Certificate exams in June this year.

At the same time, students will be given the option to choose not to appear for the exams if required. Those who are not ready to appear for the examination will be given the result as per the calculated grade.

Candidates appearing for the examination can also apply for the calculated grade. If the marks are higher than the calculated grade after the examination, they can get the marks and grade of the written examination.

Those who want a calculated grade need to apply separately.

The examination will be conducted in the month of June as per the advice of the Health Advisory Committee. The result of the written test and the common calculated grade result will be released together.

Education Minister Norma Foley hopes the proposals will provide “a system that is fair and that provides the opportunity for real progression for students”.

The Department of Education expects the Leaving Cert exams to be held in the traditional period in June, subject to public health advice. The timetable will be published by the State Examinations Commission today.

For those who decide to write the exam, practical and oral examinations will be conducted as part of the Leaving Cert exam. These exams are to take place over a number of days “during the Easter vacation or shortly after”.

However, department sources said that practical examinations “in some subjects” are not possible and revised schedules will be given in the coming weeks.

Meanwhile, the Junior Cert exams have been cancelled this year.

Minister said more details and guidelines would be published in the coming weeks.
