Bishop Doran has been reportedly banned from Twitter for opposing Dying with Dignity Bill
SLIGO: Roscommon-Sligo Bishop Kevin Doran has been reportedly banned by Twitter for uploading a post opposing the Dying with Dignity Bill. David Quinn, a conservative commentator and director of the Iona Institute, claimed that Twitter had banned Bishop Doran. However, Bishop Doran’s profile remains active, although the controversial tweet has been removed.
Bishop Kevin Doran, former Bishop of Elphin, has posted on social media that he is openly opposed to the Dying with Dignity Bill. “There is dignity in dying. As a priest, I am privileged to witness it often. Assisted suicide, where it is practiced, is not an expression of freedom or dignity, but of the failure of a society to accompany people “on their way of the cross”,” he tweeted.
The Catholic Church opposes assisted suicide and euthanasia. A detailed submission to such arguments was submitted to the Oireachtas Committee by Council for Life and Consultative Group on Bioethics. The submission reminds that the Good Samaritan has a moral responsibility to take care of his neighbour.
In 2020, Solidarity-People Before Profit TD Gino Kenny tabled a private members’ bill. It has become known as the Dying with Dignity Bill, seeking legislation for assisted suicide or physician-assisted dying in Ireland. The Bill is being considered by the Oireachtas Committee on Justice.
The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission (IHREC) recently warned the government that it needed to ensure adequate security to protect human lives before enacting the law, and that significant changes would be needed in the legislation.
