DUBLIN: Deputy Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn urged parents and guardians not to see children returning to schools as an indication that social contact is permissible.

Primary school students from junior infant to second class are returning to their classrooms from Monday for the first time this year. Under the new rules, primary school students in other classes will return on March 15.

Dr. Glynn urged parents and guardians to avoid gathering at school gates He also requested that no activities be organized after class hours.

He said ensuring a safe return of students, families and school staff to school is a priority of the National Public Health Emergency Team (NPHET) and that is why it was recommended to return to school in stages.

While acknowledging the importance of schools for the health and well-being of children, we must not underestimate the risks of COVID-19, he said.
