AI Influencer Kenza Layli of Morocco Triumphs in First Miss AI 2024 Pageant..

The World AI Creator Awards recently announced Miss AI 2024, marking the first international beauty pageant exclusively for AI influencers. Kenza Layli from Morocco emerged victorious among over 1,500 participants. Created by Myriam Bessa, CEO of Phoenix AI, Kenza, a hijab-wearing activist and influencer, captivates her 190,000 followers with content celebrating Moroccan traditions and culture. She won a $5,000 cash prize, a $3,000 mentorship programme, and PR support.

Competitors were judged on beauty, technology, and social influence by a panel including a pageant historian, a media entrepreneur, and two AI influencers. Kenza surpassed two finalists, Lalina Valina from France and Olivia C. from Portugal. In her acceptance speech, Kenza emphasised AI’s potential to disrupt industries, challenge norms, and create new opportunities while advocating for diversity and inclusivity in technology.

The pageant sparked discussions on beauty standards, with critics highlighting the unrealistic ideals perpetuated by AI-generated models. Dr. Kerry McInerney from the University of Cambridge expressed concern about losing touch with unedited appearances. AI models often reflect societal biases, including those related to body image and ethnicity. Dr. McInerney noted that these technologies tend to scale up existing patterns rather than challenge them, often reinforcing sexist, fatphobic, and colorist beauty norms.

Addressing these concerns, Sofía Novales, a project manager involved with the AI model Aitana López, acknowledged that solving the issue of unrealistic beauty standards was not their primary objective. This discussion underscores the need to critically evaluate the norms perpetuated by AI models. As AI technology advances, it is essential to ensure it fosters diversity and challenges outdated standards instead of merely replicating them.
