Alleged Russian ‘Honeytrap’ Targeted Politicians During Brexit Talks

Dublin: The Sunday Times has reported that Russian intelligence operatives used a “honeytrap” scheme to recruit politicians as agents during the Brexit negotiations, with the aim of destabilising relations between Britain, Ireland, and the European Union. According to the report, Irish military and security services identified the Russian agent involved under the codename “Cobalt.” However, the individual remains active on a parliamentary committee and is reportedly a member of the Irish opposition, although their identity has not been publicly disclosed.

The scheme, which unfolded during the Brexit negotiations, was allegedly designed to undermine the already sensitive political relationships between the UK, Ireland, and the EU. In 2022, Ireland expelled Russian diplomat Sergey Prokopiev, who was accused of involvement in the espionage operation.

When asked about the report, Prime Minister Simon Harris declined to comment directly on security matters, emphasising the sensitive nature of the issue. Harris expressed full confidence in the Garda and Ireland’s security services, assuring the public that all security threats, including this one, are being taken seriously and that international agencies have been consulted. Due to security concerns, Harris confirmed that the identity of the individual involved could not be disclosed but stressed that the matter is being handled with the utmost seriousness.
