An Post confirms an increase in domestic and international postage rates

DUBLIN: An Post has confirmed that the price of a postage stamp for a standard letter will increase at the end of this month as it modernises the postal system.

From 27 May, the price of a standard national letter stamp will rise to the EU average of €1.10, up from the current €1. The standard international letter price will also rise to €2.00 from €1.70. An Post says the price increases place the company in line with European rates.

The company had intended to implement price increases in February of last year, but they were postponed due to the COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions. This is the first increase in the price of a standard stamp in four years.

Charges for sending Registered Mail, large envelopes, and packets within Ireland will not increase. Large mailers will continue to receive discounts for high volume postings. Bulk mail prices will rise by 5 cents, while meter rates will rise by 10 cents.

An Post CEO David McRedmond said that the increases were part of the company’s decision to accelerate the modernisation of the postal system. “We’re rebuilding our infrastructure to support growth in eCommerce, expanding our e-vehicle fleet for fast, sustainable zero-emissions delivery and designing a world-class delivery structure for the community and businesses,” said Mr. McRedmond.

However, the company announced that it will extend its temporary Small and Medium Enterprise (SME) support until the end of the year, which includes a 34% discount on parcels and a 5% discount on mail through the An Post Advantage Card.

The company also stated that it will continue free postage to and from care homes and free newspaper delivery for older customers until the end of 2021 in order to maintain their Community Focus initiatives.
