Archbishop Issues Pastoral Letter Urging Solidarity with Indian Community
Dublin: The Archbishop of Dublin, Dermot Farrell, has issued a pastoral letter calling on the faithful to stand in solidarity with the Indian community in Ireland and to offer them every possible support. The letter, read in parishes across Dublin over the past two Sundays, marks the first time the Archdiocese has released a pastoral letter directed at a specific community within Ireland.

Archbishop Farrell condemned the recent violent attacks on members of the Indian community in Dublin, describing them as deeply shocking and unacceptable. “These attacks not only shatter the lives of the victims but also dishonour us as a people,” he wrote, stressing that racial abuse and discrimination—whether in the form of violence or daily mistreatment—must be confronted.
He highlighted the significant contributions of the Indian community to Ireland, particularly in healthcare, key sectors of the economy, and public services. Beyond professional contributions, he noted the role of Indian families in community life, as well as the presence of Indian priests, nuns, and volunteers in the spiritual life of the Church in Dublin. The Archbishop strongly rejected “vile and baseless accusations” spread on social media by those promoting hatred and division.
A Call to Action
Archbishop Farrell urged Irish society to stand up for justice, equality, and solidarity, calling on parishes to take concrete steps:
- Directly express solidarity with minority families and encourage them to share their experiences.
- Work with Gardaí to ensure the protection of minority communities and the prosecution of hate crimes.
- Counter misinformation and slander, ensuring parish life does not become a backdrop for prejudice.
- Promote inclusivity within parish pastoral councils by reflecting the diversity of local communities and encouraging all members to contribute their talents.
He also asked parishes to include solidarity with the Indian community as part of the Church’s “Building Hope” renewal project.

The Archbishop concluded by thanking God for the enrichment the Indian community brings to Ireland’s faith and society. “We can express our gratitude through welcome, hospitality, and solidarity. Every Christian is called to this ministry of inclusion and care,” he wrote.
