Backlog of driving license applications: Government decides to conduct theory tests online

DUBLIN: The government has taken action to clear the backlog of tens of thousands of driving license applications caused by COVID-19 restrictions and lockdown. The new decision is to conduct driver theory tests online.

There are also plans to conduct driving test on a phased basis from May 10. The Department of Transport has stated that those working in the essential sector and motorcyclists will be given priority in driving test. Then non-essential workers would be considered, beginning with those who have been waiting the longest.

The resumption of driving tests comes after Taoiseach Micheál Martin announced exemptions in COVID-19 restrictions on Thursday.

The Joint Committee on Transport and Communications Networks said that 99,636 people were unable to take their driving tests due to the restrictions.

According to the committee, 5,262 people on the list have received appointments, while 61,635 are still waiting. About 32739 people were disqualified from taking the test because they did not complete the mandatory 12 hours Essential Driver Training (EDT). In addition, there are more than 80,000 applicants waiting for the driving theory test.

The Department of Transport has said that more information will be released closer to the reopening date.
