Biden ends military support for Saudi Arabia over Yemen issue

President Joe Biden has announced that the United States will end military support for Saudi Arabia over the Yemen issue. This marks the end of US support for the Saudi invasion of Yemen. US support for Saudi-led military offensive in Yemen, the poorest country on the Arabian Peninsula, will no longer exist.

“The war has created a humanitarian and strategic catastrophe. This war has to end,” President Biden said.

The Yemeni decision is seen as the beginning of a revision of US foreign policy. Some Republican and Democratic administrations have aided authoritarian leaders abroad in the name of stability. The announcement on Yemen is a departure from such policies. It was also Biden’s campaign promise. The move is also seen as a rebuke to Saudi Arabia, a global oil giant and US strategic partner.

It will not affect the US stance against Al Qaeda

National security adviser Jake Sullivan said the end of US support for the attack would not affect US operations against Yemen-based al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, or the AQAP group. President Biden has announced that the US will end arms sales, but has not released any details. The government has already announced that it is suspending billions of dollars in arms deals with Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, a key player in the Yemeni invasion.

The Biden administration has said it intends to increase its resistance to further attacks by Yemen’s Houthis and rivals from outside, by withdrawing support for Saudi aggression in Yemen. The move is seen as part of an effort to persuade Saudi Arabia and other militants to end the conflict as a whole.

The top Saudi officials were not ready to make any remarks on this issue. After President Biden’s election, they made conciliatory moves and steps to continue their 75 – year relationship with the United States.
