Bill Proposes Renaming Dublin Airport in Honour of Former Taoiseach Seán Lemass

Dublin: The Dáil may soon debate a proposal to officially rename Dublin Airport after former Taoiseach Seán Lemass. The bill, introduced by Fianna Fáil TD Malcolm Byrne, seeks to honour the leader widely regarded as the architect of modern Ireland.

Byrne said the renaming would not merely be symbolic but a meaningful recognition of Lemass’s legacy as a revolutionary, statesman, and reformer who transformed Ireland’s economic and social landscape. He noted that naming major airports after national leaders is a common international practice and that such a tribute would reflect Lemass’s vision for progress, ambition, and opportunity.

The TD added that the move could also inspire future generations. He pointed to a recent lighthearted suggestion on the airport’s social media channels to name the airport after footballer and hat-trick hero Troy Parrott. While Byrne described the idea as interesting, he suggested that naming the upcoming metro line to the airport after Parrott would be more appropriate.

Lemass, who viewed aviation as Ireland’s bridge to the wider world, played a pivotal role in the development of Dublin Airport. He notably welcomed US President John F. Kennedy at the airport in 1963. Byrne acknowledged that the Dublin Airport Authority has several pressing issues to address but maintained that honouring Lemass would be a fitting and timely gesture.
