Bird flu hits turkey farm in Co Monaghan; County and border on alert

Monaghan: Bird flu has infected a turkey farm in Co Monaghan. Following the discovery of H5N1 avian influenza on the farm, the government imposed strict controls. Evidence of the infection was found in tests conducted this weekend on about 3,000 turkeys that were found in turkeys for sale. As a result, all of these will be killed.

The farm is very close to the border, so a three kilometre perimeter has been declared a security zone. Surveillance has also been increased to a distance of 10 kilometres. Agriculture Minister Charlie McConalogue stated that along with the officials of Northern Ireland, the officials of the Department of Agriculture in Ireland are also being vigilant.

Last Monday, the Minister of Agriculture issued an order that all poultry farms should have buildings after the news that wild birds were infected with bird flu. The tests were carried out as a precautionary measure. The disease was confirmed in seabirds in coastal areas.

The government has called for strict adherence to bird flu precautions. Despite the fact that the H5N1 strain can be fatal in chickens, the Centre for Healthcare said the risk to humans is low. Handling sick or dead wild birds, on the other hand, can be hazardous. The public is also advised not to let dogs off leash in areas with sick or dead wild birds. Consuming chicken meat or its products, according to the Centre, poses no risk.
