Boat accident in Nigeria’s Anambra state on Sunday

On Sunday, at least 76 people were killed in a boat tragedy in Nigeria’s Anambra state after a boat carrying 85 passengers crashed due to rising floodwaters.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari extended his condolences following the boat catastrophe.

The boat, reportedly carrying 85 people, crashed following increasing floodwaters in the Ogbaru area of the state, with emergency bodies reporting a dead toll of 76, the Nigerian Presidency said in a tweet.

The Nigerian government launched rescue and recovery efforts after learning of the disaster.

“Following the tragedy, the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority @WaterwaysNG and the National Emergency Management Agency @nemanigeria have quickly commenced on rescue and recovery activities,” the statement added. While additional information is gathered, the President has instructed all other rescue and relief organisations to rush to the accident location. He also asked the appropriate agencies to review the safety measures on these boats to ensure that similar occurrences do not occur in the future.

President Buhari expressed his sadness at the boat disaster and urged that all measures be taken to account for all passengers. “I pray for the peace of the souls of the departed, for everyone’s safety, and for the well-being of the victims’ family members.”
