China Bridge Collapse Death Toll Rises to 38, Two Dozen Still Missing

The death toll from the partial collapse of a highway bridge in northwestern Shaanxi province has risen to 38, according to a report by China’s state broadcaster CCTV on Friday evening. The disaster, which occurred two weeks ago on July 19, saw two dozen vehicles plunge into a rushing river.

CCTV reported that 24 people remain missing, while one person was rescued. The collapse happened after heavy rains affected the area where the Danning Highway Bridge is located. At least 25 vehicles fell into the river, and search teams have been scouring kilometres downstream for victims.

The incident has raised concerns about the safety of China’s rapidly built road and bridge infrastructure. A similar bridge collapse in Guangdong province in May resulted in 36 fatalities.

Intense rains, exacerbated by climate change, have led to numerous landslides and flooding across Asia. In China, Typhoon Gaemi, which weakened to a tropical storm upon reaching the inland province of Hunan, caused 48 deaths earlier this week.
