Climate Action Plan; Ambiguity in herd reduction plan leaves dairy farmers in a quandary

Dublin: Ambiguity in the plan to reduce the number of cattle as part of the climate change action plan puts dairy farmers in a dilemma. Many questions remain about how the plan will be implemented. The demand to solve this has arisen from various farmers’ organisation leaders.

Farmers organisations allege that efforts are being made to exclude dairy farmers in the name of climate change projects. The organisations also point out that the government is not preparing to implement a clear exit scheme, even when it is about to reduce the number of cattle. The government is causing confusion….

ICMSA President Pat McCormack alleged that dairy farmers are being completely ignored. Various dairy-related schemes that were supposed to be implemented are still gathering dust in government departments. The government is not announcing any new schemes for dairy farmers.

According to the department, in order to meet the climate target, 65,000 dairy cows must be reduced within three years. This will cost €200 million. Minister Charlie McConalogue initiated discussions on this last month, but dairy processors were strongly opposed to the exclusion of cattle.

Tirlan, the country’s largest milk processor, has asked its members for feedback on its farmers’ retirement scheme, asking them to articulate various reasons for leaving the dairy industry. The organisation has asked to clarify how much the number of cows can be reduced and how the land will be used if cattle are avoided.
