Common Travel Area (CTA) between Ireland and the UK

The Common Travel Area (CTA) is an agreement between the United Kingdom (UK) and Ireland that grants the people of those countries a number of privileges. It entails more than just the basic freedom to freely travel between the two nations.

There was no legislation in place when the Common Travel Area arrangement began in 1922. It was an agreement between Ireland and the United Kingdom based on their shared history. Some of the rights were eventually included in various pieces of legislation in both Ireland and the United Kingdom.

While the Treaty of Amsterdam recognises the Common Travel Area, it is not dependent on the European Union and the continuing membership of both countries.

The Irish and British governments signed a Memorandum of Understanding on May 8, 2019, reinforcing the Common Travel Area and defining the rights and benefits of Irish and British nationals inside the CTA. It also underlined the intention to keep the CTA in place after Brexit.

Your rights within the Common Travel Area
Citizens of Ireland and the United Kingdom are the only ones who have access to the Common Travel Area. You cannot use your Common Travel Area privileges if you are not a citizen of Ireland or the United Kingdom.

For the purposes of the Common Travel Area, the United Kingdom includes England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Isle of Man, and the Channel Islands.

Citizens of Ireland and the United Kingdom have the right to reside, travel, work, and study within the Common Travel Area. The UK’s Immigration and Social Security (EU Withdrawal) Act 2020 recognises the rights of Irish nationals.

Citizens of Ireland and the United Kingdom can live in either country and enjoy the following rights and privileges:

Access to social benefits
Healthcare access
Access to social housing assistance
The right to vote in certain elections
The Common Travel Area has nothing to do with commodities or customs.
