Court fined male nurse and wife for running a brothel at home to make a living

DUBLIN: A male nurse and his wife were fined by the court for making a living from prostitution. It is being investigated whether their acts have thrown the nursing profession into disrepute.

The protagonist is Mr. David Navaro, a Spanish national who formerly worked as a nurse in a nursing home in County Clare. Following an Ennis District Court ruling, the case is being heard by a Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland committee (NMBI). The couple was fined €600 by the court for aiding and abetting prostitution in the family home.

They found the client by advertising on an escort website Escort Ireland. The income from this was between €4,000 and €5,000 per month, with a charge of €200 per hour. After being convicted, David Navaro told gardai that they had no idea it was illegal in Ireland and did it to fund their children’s education. The NMBI informed Navaro of the court proceedings, but he did not appear at the hearing in Dublin.

David Navaro and his Brazilian-born wife, Celia Galan arrived in Ireland from Barcelona in 2015. Navaro and his wife were posing as “Anne and Peter” on the internet.

Their home in Station View, Ennis, were under garda surveillance since 2016. Detective Garda Noelle Bergin said that a garda who had been observing the house concluded that “brothel-keeping was going on at that address.”

The fitness to practice committee was advised that a conviction does not always imply professional misconduct. But if Navaro admits to prostitution and defaming the nursing profession, the committee must consider it professional misconduct.

Det Garda O’Connor said Navaro fully co-operated with the investigation. He said Navaro and his wife “participated in these acts together.” O’Connor explained that the couple’s children were attending college in Spain and that this was done to help fund their education.

Daragh Hassett, the couple’s solicitor, testified in court that his clients had no idea what they were doing was illegal in this country. The investigation was concluded so that the fitness to practice committee may review, but no findings were announced.
