DUBLIN: The Department of Health has confirmed 591 new cases of COVID-19 in Ireland yesterday. No new deaths were reported yesterday.
The total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in Ireland is now 238,466. The death toll from COVID-19 remains at 4,718.
A total of 260 people are hospitalised with COVID-19, with 58 patients are currently being treated in the intensive care unit.
As of 2 April, 923,878 COVID-19 vaccine doses were administered in Ireland. 655,292 people received their first dose, and 268,586 received their second dose.
Tánaiste Leo Varadkar said the vaccination program would be accelerated in the coming weeks. “We are going to see the vaccine programme being accelerated in coming weeks. By the middle to the end of May we anticipate that the majority of adults will have had their first dose and the over 70s will be fully vaccinated,” he said.
“By the end of June the vast majority, more than 80%, of adults will have had their first dose and we hope we can do even better than that.” Mr. Varadkar added.
HSE CEO Paul Reid had earlier said that HSE will have administered one million vaccine doses this week.
Meanwhile, two further COVID-19-related deaths and 89 new positive cases were confirmed in Northern Ireland yesterday.
