COVID-19 outbreaks confirmed at universities of Galway and Limerick

GALWAY: COVID-19 outbreaks have been confirmed at the University of Galway and the University of Limerick. The Department of Health has confirmed the formation of various infection clusters at the Universities of Galway and Limerick. These outbreaks were the result of a mass violation of lockdown restrictions by some university students.

Dr. Lorraine Doherty of the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), revealed that 135 positive cases, 35 suspected cases and 30 symptomatic cases are being tested as a result of the outbreak among students in Galway.

Outbreaks were reported from 15 clusters in Galway. Some of them include up to 40 people. Each cluster contains an average of two to three households. In Limerick, have tested positive for COVID-19 over the last few days and weeks. Widespread screening has begun as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the virus.

Outbreaks were confirmed in universities as 821 COVID-19 cases were reported in the Republic of Ireland on Monday.

Meanwhile, 33 deaths and 744 new cases were confirmed in the country yesterday. The death toll from COVID-19 in Ireland has risen to 3,980. The total number of confirmed cases is 211,113.
