COVID-19 vaccination for young people; Government launches €100k social media campaign

DUBLIN: The government has launched a €100,000 social media campaign to promote the uptake of COVID-19 vaccines among young people. The campaign is active on social media platforms Instagram and TikTok as @scicommcollective_ire.

Student scientist volunteers are spearheading this initiative by posting interesting and thought-provoking content in order to make vaccination more appealing to young people.

A spokeswoman for the Department of Health said the campaign would run for at least six months. “A budget of €100k has been allocated to support the collective to make creative content and to amplify their voices. Sponsored posts amount to about €20k per month,” she said.

The campaign team includes 12 young scientists, including Andrew McGovern, a PhD fellow and teaching assistant at the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Limerick.

Mr. McGovern’s most popular social media post is about the mental health impacts of the lockdowns. It has over 71,000 views on Instagram and 1,284 views on TikTok.

He said the campaign’s aim is to motivate people who are hesitant to get vaccinated. Mr. McGovern said he gets ideas for posts from friends who ask vaccine-related queries.
