Decline in Drunk Driving Incidents; Now Drug-Impaired Driving, says Garda Commissioner

Dublin: Garda Commissioner Drew Harris made it unequivocally clear during a recent road safety initiative aimed at school children that there will be zero tolerance for drugged drivers. Speaking passionately about the perils of distracted driving, particularly the use of mobile phones, Commissioner Harris underscored the gravity of the issue against the backdrop of persisting challenges on the roads.

Despite concerted efforts, incidents of speeding and road collisions persist, with last year witnessing over 150,000 drivers caught by the Garda. Tragically, 36 lives have already been lost in road accidents this year. Commissioner Harris highlighted the significant fines, totaling €19,000, levied against individuals caught using mobile phones while driving, emphasising the serious consequences of such actions.

While there has been a decline in instances of drunk driving, any solace derived from this achievement is overshadowed by a concerning surge in drug-impaired driving. Despite considerable efforts, success in curbing this trend has been limited, amplifying the threat posed by drivers under the influence of drugs. Commissioner Harris reiterated that excessive speed remains a grave concern, further emphasising the need for collective vigilance on the roads.

The road safety campaign, spearheaded by Scoil Mhuire and Scoil Bhride, champions the slogan ‘Phone Down, Safe Driving’, with its message resonating across local radio waves. In a collaborative effort with Offaly County Council and the Gardai, new pilot road signals have been deployed around the town, aiming to enhance road safety measures.

Additionally, popular pop-band Chasing Abbey and Offaly hurler Adam Screeney are lending their voices to an eight-week social media campaign, further amplifying the crucial message of safe driving practices. Through such concerted efforts, stakeholders aim to instill a culture of responsibility and vigilance on the roads, ensuring the safety of all road users.
