Dubai kicked off the new year by scrapping a 30% tax on alcohol; aims for global tourism

Dubai: In order to promote tourism in Dubai, the alcohol tax has been reduced. Alcohol sales are subject to a 30% tax reduction. It is indicated that the competition between the Gulf cities has caused this tax reduction.

Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital, has increased its efforts to attract foreign visitors and businesses.

This cut in tax was released by the distributors. This has not been confirmed by the authorities. It is believed that there will be a big reduction here, where the price of alcohol was the highest in the world. The price of a pint, a half litre and a bottle of beer was more than 15 dollars here.

Individual liquor licences are only available to non-Muslims over the age of 21 in Dubai. Only they could buy alcohol from a limited number of licenced shops in Dubai. But MMI, the distributor, African and Eastern says that it has now been made free. MMI stated on Facebook that they can now easily and affordably purchase their favourite drinks.

Dubai is the economic, trade, and tourism hub of the UAE, a Muslim country and major oil exporter. In the first 11 months of 2022, Dubai received over 12 million visitors. In 2021, it was 6.02 million. According to the Department of Economy and Tourism, the number of visitors more than doubled last year.

With a licence, bars and designated shops in the UAE can sell alcohol. However, alcohol consumption is not permitted in public places. Only Sharjah, one of the UAE’s seven emirates, has completely banned alcohol.
