Dublin City honors healthcare workers; CMO Holohan receives ‘Freedom of Dublin’

DUBLIN: Dublin City paid tribute to healthcare workers in the country who fought as frontline fighters against the COVID-19 pandemic. On behalf of health workers across the country, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Tony Holohan received the Honorary Freedom of the City of Dublin from Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu.

A resolution to honor Dr. Holohan for his leadership activities, as well as health workers across the country for their efforts throughout the pandemic, was unanimously passed by the Dublin City Council last year. The Honorary Freedom of the City award was handed to Ireland’s CMO during a ceremony held in the Oak Room of the Mansion House, Dawson Street.

“In conferring on Dr Holohan, and through him our health care workers, the Honorary Freedom of the City of Dublin, we recognise the immense effort and tireless work carried out by all our health care staff, and we want to, through this award, say a big thank you for their efforts and sacrifices,” said Lord Mayor of Dublin Hazel Chu.

“It has been an extremely difficult 16 months, and we owe our public health workers and frontline staff an enormous debt,” she added.

Dr. Holohan accepted the award on behalf of all health care workers and expressed gratitude to Dublin City Council for the recognition. He also signed the Roll of Honorary Freedom. The Honorary Freedom Award was first introduced by Dublin City in 1872. So far, 82 people have received the award.
