Dublin is 39th most expensive city in the world for expats
DUBLIN: Dublin is ranked 39th in the world in terms of the cost of living for expats. The ranking is based on the Mercer 2021 Cost of Living survey, which was conducted in 209 cities worldwide to determine which city is the most expensive for expatriate workers to live in.
The survey aims to assist multinational corporations and governments in determining the pay rates of their expatriate employees.
Dublin is up seven places from last year’s ranking. According to Noel O’Connor, Senior Consultant at Mercer, rental accommodation is one of the primary factors influencing Dublin’s rankings.
“High demand, coupled with supply constraints in the private rental market, mean some expatriates have difficulty finding appropriate rental accommodation, often the biggest cost for companies placing employees on assignment,” Mr. O’Connor said.
Zurich, Geneva and Bern most expensive in Europe
Among the top ten list of most expensive cities in Europe are the Swiss cities of Zurich (fifth), Geneva (eighth) and Bern (tenth). Paris is ranked 33rd, and Milan is ranked 36th. London ranks 18th among the highest-ranking Western European cities. Vienna (37), Amsterdam (44), Rome (47) and Munich (52) are also on the list.
Ashgabat is the most expensive city
Ashgabat in Turkmenistan is the most expensive city for expatriates, followed by Hong Kong. Beirut has climbed 42 places to become the third most expensive city. Tokyo and Zurich are fourth and fifth, respectively. Singapore moved up from fifth to seventh place.
New York in the US
New York is the most expensive city in the US, but it ranks 14th in the survey. Los Angeles is 20th, San Francisco 25th, Honolulu 43rd and Chicago 45th. Winston Salem continues to be the least expensive US city.
Vancouver, which is ranked 93rd, is the most expensive Canadian city in the ranking, followed by Toronto, which is ranked 98th. Ottawa is the least expensive city in Canada.
Port of Spain, ranked 91st in South America, is the most costly city, followed by Port-au-Prince, ranked 92nd. Brasilia is the least expensive city in South America.
Sydney, in 31st place, is Australia’s most expensive city, followed by Melbourne, in 59th place.
