Dublin Zoo Faces €150,000 Cost to Manage Virus Outbreak That Claimed Two Young Elephants

Dublin: Dublin Zoo estimates the cost of managing the virus outbreak that claimed the lives of two young Asian elephants, Avani and Zinda, will be between €100,000 and €150,000. The outbreak of Elephant Endotheliotropic Herpesvirus (EEHV) required extensive veterinary care, additional staffing, and resources. Despite the losses, the zoo recently declared its elephant herd healthy after a significant effort from staff, international experts, and governmental support.

In 2023, visitor numbers dropped by 9% due to bad weather, particularly during the wettest July on record, contributing to a €486,000 operating loss. However, the Zoological Society of Ireland, which oversees Dublin Zoo and Fota Island Wildlife Park, saw a revenue increase of 2% to €25.1 million. Despite broader industry challenges, Dublin Zoo’s 2024 visitor numbers are outperforming the previous year.

The zoo continues to strengthen its financial position, with a focus on conservation efforts and capital investments. Staff costs rose to €8 million, and the society’s total funds amounted to €35.65 million at the end of last year.
