Enoch Burke returned to Wilson’s Hospital School after being dismissed from his teaching job

Dublin: Enoch Burke, a former teacher at Wilson’s Hospital School in Westmeath who returned to the school despite being dismissed by the school’s management, has been arrested by gardaí for breaching the public order.

Burke and his father arrived at the school grounds around 8.30 a.m. yesterday. Although the authorities stopped him at the gate, Burke also entered with a school bus entering. This prompted school officials to contact the Garda. Gardaí arrived and made an arrest.

The issues began when the school management refused to accept the suggestion of what to call a transgender student. As an evangelical Christian, the teacher believed that accepting this suggestion would be contrary to the faith. He was then suspended in August of last year.

The problem reappeared when he returned to work despite being suspended. The management went to the High Court and obtained an order against the teacher. When this order was not followed, the teacher was imprisoned by the court. He spent 108 days in jail for contempt of court.

During the Christmas holidays, he was granted bail. The court granted bail with strict conditions, including a prohibition on returning to school. However, when the school reopened on January 5, he came in violation of the bail conditions.

He was then fired by the management.
