“EU Countries to Decide on Recognizing State of Palestine on May 21st”

Dublin: European Union member states are advancing steps towards recognising Palestine as an independent state, with Ireland and Spain taking the lead in this effort. Currently, eight EU member countries, including Ireland, Spain, Slovenia, Malta, and Sweden, have already acknowledged Palestine. It is anticipated that other member states will follow suit by the 21st.

Deliberations and consultations are underway among like-minded state leaders. A joint statement was signed by former Prime Minister Leo Varadkar and the Prime Ministers of Spain, Malta, and Slovenia on March 22, underlining their support for this cause. Furthermore, Ireland and Spain jointly petitioned the European Commission for a reassessment of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, exerting pressure on the commission to make a favourable decision in this regard.

Simon Harris, the current Prime Minister, has voiced his alignment with this stance on the Palestine issue. Recently, Harris engaged in discussions with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, both affirming the necessity of recognising Palestine as an independent state to foster peace in the Middle East.

Both leaders emphasised the significance of this recognition as essential for ensuring security and peace in the region. Prime Minister Simon Harris has unequivocally stated Ireland’s intention to vote in favour of Palestine during the UN General Assembly’s consideration of the matter. Harris conveyed this commitment during a session of the Green Parliamentary Party meeting. Additionally, Harris highlighted Ireland’s support for South Africa’s intervention in the genocide case filed at the International Court of Justice, expected by October.

A spokesperson for the Prime Minister clarified that Ireland remains steadfast in its pursuit of a peaceful resolution to the conflict, advocating for the establishment of a two-state solution.
