EU Recalls Brazilian Beef After Detection of Banned Hormones Across Multiple Countries

Brussels: The European Commission has ordered an immediate recall of Brazilian beef products after routine checks revealed the presence of banned hormones in frozen beef imported into the European Union.

The contaminated products, which arrived earlier this month, were identified in several EU member states, including Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Germany, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, and Slovakia. The United Kingdom, including Northern Ireland, also reported the presence of the affected beef products on shelves.

Concerns Tied to Mercosur Trade Agreement

The discovery has intensified criticism of the Mercosur trade agreement, with farming groups saying the incident exposes major weaknesses in Brazil’s regulatory system. The Irish Farmers Association (IFA) warned that the recall raises serious questions about Brazil’s production standards and oversight.

Reports from the Irish Farmers Journal previously highlighted that antibiotics can be purchased without prescription in Brazil and that growth hormones—banned within the EU—remain readily accessible. The Mercosur agreement, still under negotiation, would create the world’s largest free-trade zone and permit the export of 99,000 tonnes of beef and 180,000 tonnes of poultry annually from Mercosur countries—Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay—into the EU.

Countries such as Ireland and France have strongly opposed the deal, arguing it would undermine EU food safety standards and destabilise domestic agricultural markets.

IFA President Francie Gorman criticised the lack of adequate controls in Brazilian slaughterhouses, warning that this lapse has now allowed hormone-treated beef to reach European consumers.

He described the incident as a stark warning to EU officials and advocates of the Mercosur deal who, he said, are prioritising the interests of big business over the health and well-being of European farmers and consumers.

Gorman emphasised that the discovery should prompt the EU to reassess its engagement with the Mercosur bloc and strengthen safeguards to protect food safety and agricultural integrity across Europe.
