Europe temperatures have increased more than twice the global average, report says: ‘Europe as a burning continent’

Brussels: Europe is becoming the world’s burning continent. This is supported by the World Meteorological Organization’s (WMO) report, which confirms that the temperature in Europe is steadily rising.

According to the UN climate report, temperatures in Europe have risen more than twice as fast as the global average over the last 30 years. The report warns that Europeans are not immune to climate change. According to the report, Europe is a living example of a warming world.

Warming began within a decade.

Since 1991, the temperature in Europe has been steadily rising. Over the last decade, it has warmed by an average of 0.5 degrees Celsius. According to the report, this process is accelerating. Last year, storms, torrential rains, and floods caused huge damage all over Europe. It affected approximately 5 lakh people. The report also said that there was damage worth 50 billion euros. By 2022, heat waves, droughts, and forest fires would have caused more damage.

Record “achievement” in snowmelt

The climate report for 2021 has been prepared by the European Union’s Copernicus Climate Change Service and the UN. According to the report, Alpine glaciers lost 30 metres (about 100 feet) between 1997 and 2021. The melting of Greenland’s ice sheet is raising sea levels. For the first time in history, this is taking place.

In Turkey, Italy, and Greece, it has caused severe droughts, high temperatures, and massive wildfires. Following the heatwave, the temperature in Syracuse, Sicily, reached a record 48.8 degrees Celsius in the summer (August).

Climate pollution is decreasing.

At the same time, some EU countries have succeeded in reducing climate pollution, according to the report. Based on the report, the EU aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 55% by 2030, but between 1990 and 2020, emissions were reduced by 31%.

Countries agreed to reduce global temperatures by 2/1.5 degrees Celsius in the 2015 Paris Agreement. Some other UN reports stated that the countries of the world still have a long way to go in achieving this goal.
