Dublin: A new European security strategy has called on households across Ireland and Europe to be prepared for unexpected crises, including the possibility of war or large-scale national emergencies. The plan, published by the UK-based Prayer website, outlines practical guidelines for families to build resilience in the face of growing global threats.
For the first time in years, the strategy explicitly warns of the need to prepare for large-scale disruptions such as power outages, water shortages, supply chain breakdowns, and extreme weather events. It highlights that adversaries may already be working to undermine energy systems and supply chains, potentially paving the way for future conflict.
Households are advised to stockpile essential supplies, including:
- At least 30 litres of water per person (enough for three days), with a recommended 10 litres per day to cover drinking, cooking, and hygiene needs.
- Additional water for baby formula, pets, and medical equipment.
- Canned meats, fruits, vegetables, a tin opener, and pet food.
The World Health Organisation recommends a daily minimum of 2.5–3 litres of drinking water per person. The strategy also suggests families prepare escape routes, keep important documents secure, ensure smoke alarms are functioning, and build supplies gradually to avoid financial strain.
The document stresses that emergencies can arise suddenly — from severe weather, natural disasters, accidents, or deliberate attacks — and may last for hours, days, or even months. It also calls on governments to improve cross-departmental cooperation and strengthen resilience at both community and national levels.
