European Union Set to Launch New Entry/Exit System (EES)

Brussels: The European Union is preparing to roll out a new automated Entry/Exit System (EES) next month, designed to streamline border control procedures for non-EU citizens. The EES aims to enhance security, prevent visa overstays, and combat illegal immigration by detecting individuals using false identities to enter the EU. The system is expected to replace the current manual passport stamping process, marking a significant shift in how the EU manages external border controls.

How the EES Will Work

The EES will allow non-EU citizens to enter and exit EU countries independently through an automated process. Unlike previous systems, this new system will apply to all non-EU visitors, regardless of whether they are entering under a visa-free arrangement.

Key to the system is the collection of both biometric and personal data. Travellers will be required to provide fingerprints, facial recognition data, and other biometric information alongside the personal details included in their travel documents. This information will be used to create a unique profile for each traveller, which can store data for up to three years. These profiles will then be used to track the entry and exit of non-EU citizens across EU borders.

Delayed Implementation to Mid-November

Initially planned for implementation in October, the EES is now expected to come into force in mid-November. This delay came after several EU member states, including France, Germany, and the Netherlands, requested additional time to prepare for the system’s introduction. These countries cited the need for more time to carry out testing and ensure the smooth operation of the new border management system.

According to sources, the EES is likely to be operational by November 10 or 17. The countries in question have communicated their concerns to EU Commissioner Ylva Johansson, emphasising the importance of thoroughly testing the system before its full implementation.

Once fully operational, the EES is anticipated to significantly enhance the EU’s ability to manage its borders and monitor the movements of non-EU citizens, contributing to a more secure and efficient immigration process.
