Fianna Fáil Leadership Under Pressure as Micheál Martin Faces Growing Internal Dissent

Dublin: Fianna Fáil leader and Taoiseach Micheál Martin is facing increasing scrutiny from within his own party over his handling of the presidential election, particularly the selection of the party’s candidate. Discontent has spread even among Martin’s long-time allies, with senior figures expressing frustration and fatigue over his leadership style.

The party’s internal review of its presidential election performance is expected to conclude by November 12, assessing the candidate selection process, campaign strategy, and overall management of the election. However, many within the party are calling for decisive leadership changes even before the review’s completion.

TDs John Lahart and John McGuinness have publicly called for a leadership change, with Senator Anne Rabbitte, a former TD, voicing her support for that stance.

Questions Over Candidate Selection

Central to the growing rift is the question of how Jim Gavin emerged as Fianna Fáil’s presidential candidate—and what role Martin personally played in that decision. Critics argue that the leadership ignored the advice of senior party members, deepening internal divisions.

While Chief Whip Mary Butler continues to stand firmly behind Martin, asserting that he retains “strong support within the parliamentary party”, others warn that his leadership has become increasingly untenable. Butler acknowledged the disappointment over the election outcome but said Martin’s “track record and dedication should not be dismissed over one misstep.”

TD Malcolm Byrne voiced the concerns of the backbench, stating that many feel excluded from decision-making. “Senior figures are not listening to us,” he said. “While I have great respect for Micheál Martin, the presidential election has caused serious damage to the party.”

Senator Anne Rabbitte described the dissatisfaction within Fianna Fáil as “deeper than it appears”, adding that a significant number of councillors want the leadership issue resolved before the party’s next manifesto is released.

Meanwhile, Cork East TD James O’Connor said the ongoing review must ensure such mistakes are never repeated, revealing that party members in Galway are particularly frustrated.
