Dublin: Finance Minister Paschal Donohoe may be re-elected as Eurogroup president. Paschal Donohoe is getting a second chance now that the government has decided to nominate him for this position.
Following a rift between Fiannafail and Fine Gael, his re-nomination came after months of speculation. Deputy Prime Minister Leo Varadkar had expressed concern that if Dono’s position as finance minister was lost, Ireland would lose its Eurogroup presidency.
When the cabinet is reshuffled in December, Michael McGrath may take over as finance minister. Instead, Paschal Donohoe will be given the Department of Public Expenditure. He will also represent Ireland in the Eurogroup and the Economic and Financial Affairs Council.
The procedure for the presidential election will be announced by the Council Secretariat at the Eurogroup meeting on November 7. The group consists of finance ministers from each member state.
